As I write this blog, I am now happily working from home for a year and half now. I am glad that I did this level up in my career. I was previously working in an Airline company for almost 10 years. I was promoted thrice and was really enjoying my everyday challenges & learnings, the friends that became my family and of course the free flight benefits. I love my career in the Airline Industry and I will be forever grateful for the mentors, managers and colleagues that I have worked with.

It was after I gave birth to my 2nd son that I realized that I needed to do something for myself and for my family. The everyday struggle of waking up at 3am to prepare for 5am work, the hours of hustle and bustle on MRT, bus and jeepney rides just to get home and not being able to spend time with my kids for being so tired the whole day were just only a few reasons that made me transitioned to working from home.

Here are the top 5 reasons that made me decide to work from home:

More play and cuddle time with your kids

Working from home allows me to work while taking care of my kids. I feel great being able to have the freedom to play, cuddle and eat with them in between my breaks. I can see them wake up in the morning, listen to their stories, make sure they are in good shape and so much more. Working from home saves me money on child care and most importantly I don’t have to request for vacation time for doctor’s appointments, school gatherings, and the likes.

Save money at home

Work from home life can be hugely rewarding but you need to have a rainy-day fund for the slow days before thinking of a day of splurging. The household budgets are flexible by necessity. I can plan and keep track on all the savings and expenses (bills, taxes and etc). I can save on lunches, coffee breaks, commuting costs, and all those little impulse buys I often make without thinking.

No commuting from work to home and vice versa

Travelling for longer hours is not new to me as I have been commuting since college but as a mom, I find it a waste of time. 2 hours going to work and another 2 hours going back home is 4 hours of depriving me of my right to be with my kids. When I started working from home, I got to wake up at 5:30 am for my 6:00 am shift, be in a meeting without make up on, drink coffee while I check on emails and daily tasks and I got to spend more hours with the people who really matters to me.

More time to invest in yourself and the things you want to learn

As a work from home mom, I know I needed to keep up with the flow in the Digital world. The competition in this industry is extremely high so, every now and then you need to level up. As for me, I have allotted an extra savings for enrolling in different platforms that I know would benefit me in the coming years. I’ve joined different freelancing groups and I continue reading and learning.

Home is the safest place now

We all know that many of us have been affected by the COVID19 and our homes now are not just a place for us to live – they have become our offices, schools and playgrounds. Our homes are the safest place now to work, study and play.

Nevertheless, working from home and working in the corporate world are both careers and faces different challenges every day. We may be choosing different paths but, in the end, successfully juggling work and family life will help us become stronger and empowered moms!
